Today I want to talk about an important insurance coverage that you might be missing out on.  It’s called Scheduled Personal Property and you’ll find it on your Home or Renters Insurance.

Here’s How It Works:

Your Homeowners insurance automatically covers your personal belongings - everything in your home from sheets and clothes to pans and toothbrushes.  But many of us have a few special items that cost a little more.  Things like jewelry, artwork, guns, and collectibles.

Your home insurance covers these items, just like any personal property, but the total amount of coverage could be limited to less than what they are actually worth.  (You would need to have us look at your current policy for the limits.) For example, you might have a "sublimit" of $1500 for jewelry coverage on your current policy if you don't itemize it.

So how can you be sure you get the full replacement cost of your engagement ring or your favorite watch? You itemize it on your policy or you have what is called "Scheduled Personal Property." With this coverage, we specifically list these high value items on your policy.  If anything happens to them, they would be insured at their full value.

Keep in mind many times all you will need is a copy of your receipt or an appraisal to add these items to your policy.  Your scheduled items will have an additional cost and may have their own deductible.  But the good news is sometimes that deductible can be $0 or less than what you have for your home. We can give you all of the details before adding the item.

If you have any jewelry or collectibles that might need additional coverage (like your wedding bands) or valuable artwork, coins, guns, etc, give us a call today for more information.  We can tell you exactly what it will cost and what documentation is needed to make it happen.
